Professional IT Business Analyst Job Description Template

IT business analysts serve as the bridge between business and information technology. They determine a company’s IT requirements, analyze and document those requirements and work with a development team to build a functional solution.

Analysts work to align business goals with software requirements, but some positions focus more closely on the technical requirements for software implementation, while others work with the business side to determine software solutions. Be sure to explain what the main focus of your position is in your IT business analyst job description.

Some positions will require IT business analysts to have specific technical knowledge or experience that will narrow the field of qualified applicants, so it’s important to include any specifics about what technology you expect a new employee to be familiar with. Read over the IT business analyst job description template below for more ideas of what to include in your job posting.

IT Business Analyst Job Responsibilities

The main part of your IT business analyst job description is the responsibilities section. This is your version of a resume’s work experience section, which points out jobseekers’ duties and accomplishments in other jobs. The responsibilities section presents to the applicant exactly what working in the position looks like. Use bullet points and strong verbs so that the jobseeker can easily read and envision the day-to-day responsibilities.

While a lot of thought should be put into this section, it doesn’t need to go on forever. When you write your IT business analyst job description, you should lay out the important tasks and responsibilities concisely with between six and eight bullet points.

The following are samples of what you might include in your IT business analyst job responsibilities:

  • Coordinate work with IT operations to resolve technical problems, install new servers and support and manage the operating system and hardware upgrades
  • Manage key projects and make sure projects are finished within budget and on schedule and delivered with high quality
  • Provide reporting solutions for clients and corporate management, and administer and maintain these solutions
  • Monitor the configuration, installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of end-user software, hardware, peripheral and database devices
  • Analyze information and data at varying levels to determine technical needs of the business
IT Business Analyst Job Specifications

Designing an IT business analyst job description takes some thought into what will attract the right employee. One of the important sections is the job qualifications and skills. It may seem like a short section, but its contents should be thought out with careful consideration. If you don’t take the time to do this, you will have a lot more resumes to sift through, and many of them may be under- or overqualified.

Sit down with the management team or others who understand this role and discuss the qualities that you require for the job and those you prefer. If you can, include both of these lists in your IT business analyst job description to attract the best of the best. General examples of qualifications you should include are education, hard and soft skills, foreign language requirements, technical skills and personality traits. List these in bullet-point form and do not have more than 6-8 of them so you don’t overwhelm the reader.

Here are some specific examples of ideas to include in the IT business analyst job specifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; minimum 2 years’ experience preferred
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical skills, with ability to understand business procedures
  • Experience with MYSQL, Postgre SQL, MSSQL Server and JQuery
