Writing a Job Description Best Practices

While the above is an excellent Warehouse Supervisor job description sample, there may be situations when you are unable to find an example for a posting. Following are a few best practices and practical do’s and don’ts for those times to ensure that you write an accurate position description and save yourself the hassle of weeding through stacks of unqualified applicants.

• Do indicate experience and qualifications accurately.
• Do write the job description using friendly, informal language to make it engaging and attractive to potential candidates.
• Don’t imply partiality for a particular race, gender, or age.
• Do include the major and specific duties and tasks of the role.
• Don’t overstate the requirements, expertise, or skills necessary for success in the company.
• Don’t put anything in the position description subject to interpretation of a promise of employment or an offer.
• Do use language indicating your organization is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
• Do include benefits information and salary ranges unless it against company policy.
• Do highlight your corporate culture to make potential candidates want to apply.

The Warehouse Supervisor job description sample above is a great example of a job posting that can be useful for attracting the best performers and encourage them to submit their resumes, even if they aren’t currently job searching. Warehouse Supervisor Job Responsibilities

In your warehouse supervisor job description, you’ll need to include a list of 6-8 job responsibilities. As the most substantive part of the posting, this section should comprise the core tasks that will make up the greater part of your new hire’s day. Descriptions of secondary responsibilities aren’t needed until later in the hiring process, though if you strongly wish to include eight or more bullet points, you may want to split your list into two: primary warehouse supervisor job responsibilities and secondary ones.

If your warehouse has unusual specifications (cold or frozen storage, production on site, etc.), consider including this information in your warehouse supervisor job description (e.g., “Manage dock workers and collaborate with production supervisor”). The following are some further examples that may help you write your own job responsibilities section:

  • Oversee 10–15 employees, including office staff, during the swing shift (1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.) on week days and occasional weekends/holidays
  • Assign teams and allocate work fairly and in a way that best uses employees’ skills
  • Enforce safety standards and ensure OSHA compliance
  • Load and unload trucks according to the schedule, rather than the order drivers arrive; accommodate work-ins when possible
  • Lead the warehouse safety committee and recommend improvements in SOP
  • Act as liaison between office staff, dock staff, upper management and truck drivers
Warehouse Supervisor Job Specifications

The job qualifications and skills section you include in your warehouse supervisor job description can make the difference between a quick, easy hiring process ending in the right person and a long, painful process creating high turnover. Setting the minimum standards too low in the warehouse supervisor job specifications can bring a flood of unqualified applicants and lead to a frustrating number of hours digging through unsuitable resumes and cover letters. Similarly, standards set too high can cause high turnover by attracting candidates who will be unsatisfied in the position.

Some supervisory skills are “soft” skills; keep these as specific as possible. Rather than “good people skills,” specify the types of communication in your warehouse supervisor job description: managing unsatisfied truck drivers, working with staff who may not have strong English skills or whatever else the position will require. Here are some examples of job specifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a warehouse lead required; shift supervisor experience preferred
  • Needs organizational skills to run shift efficiently, assign tasks and keep to warehouse schedule
  • An eye for detail is necessary, as the warehouse supervisor will be responsible for safety standards on his or her shift and will occasionally have to run a full inventory
  • Second language skills (Spanish or Vietnamese) desired
  • Great people skills are necessary to collaborate with upper management, truck drivers, office staff and dock workers
