Insubordination occurs when an employee refuses to do an action asked of him or her by a superior. In order to determine if the refusal of an action is indeed insubordination, certain aspects must be proved. The refusal of the action must be both deliberate and willful. The expectations for the employee must have been clearly communicated to the worker at the beginning of employment, and the orders being given to the employee must be within the scope of his or her responsibilities. If an employee is asked to do something illegal or unethical, then it would not be insubordinate of the individual to refuse.
