Unwelcome behavior or conduct is any behavior by subordinates, peers, or superiors that is deemed offensive or unwelcome by an employee. This behavior can include inappropriate remarks or jokes, discriminatory behavior, or unwanted romantic advances and gestures. Unwelcome behavior lowers productivity in the workplace and is considered illegal in the majority of jurisdictions. It is also detrimental to the physical, emotional, and psychological health of employees. If workers or managers engage in unwelcome conduct towards an employee, the guilty party will sometimes be subject to legal action or termination. If an employee is on the receiving end of this particular unlawful employment practice, he or she should alert the human resources department immediately.
