10 Top Ways to Optimize the Job Title in Your Posting

There are more ways than ever to post a job listing. While traditional methods like the newspaper and college bulletin boards are still viable, there are numerous places online where you can post a listing. However, in order to attract the best candidates, you are going to need a great title. Candidates often see the title first before the rest of the listing, so you need to have an attention-grabbing title that makes people want to click on your ad. In order to have more success in the hiring process, optimize the job title for any listing with these simple tips.

Do Not Get Creative

The listing title is not the place to get all cute and creative. You want something that is straightforward and accurately describes what you are looking for. You do not want to make up a job title because you think it is clever. You also do not want something vague like, ï“Help Make Our Company Great.ï” This tells applicants nothing and will make them more likely to scroll right past it.

Be Simple, Not Vague

Although you want to accurately mention the type of job you are looking to fill, you do not want to be too vague to where your posting could be talking about almost any position. Instead of simply having ï“Assistant,ï” you could have ï“Office Assistant,ï” ï“Administrative Assistanceï” or ï“Assistant (Part-Time).ï” The more information you can put in to optimize the job title, the better.

Do Not Use Language Only You Understand

You do not want to put information into your title that only you would understand. For instance, you would not want to have a job title along the lines of ï“Data Entry Level 3.ï” Data entry is fairly vague on its own, but someone who does not work at your company is going to have no clue what ï“Level 3ï” means. Leave that material out so that someone is not confused before they have even read the description.

Stick to the Basics

As far as the title goes, you really want to stick with just what the position is titled. There is no need to go into too many details in the title. For example, you would want to avoid mentioning the salary in the title because it could make people not apply if it is not quite what they are looking for. You will have lost applicants before they even know what the job is about.

Know Your Competition

It can be incredibly beneficial if you want to optimize the job title to see what your competition is putting. Find companies similar to yours and research what job openings they have available. While you do not want to plagiarize, see what kinds of titles they are using to draw in applicants.

Have a Searchable Title

Many people looking for a new job will simply type in the kind of job they are looking for into a search engine and see what comes up. Someone would be more likely to search for ï“Secretaryï” than ï“Front Desk Help.ï” There are tools available to help you get a sense of what people are likely to look for.

Keep It Consistent

You are more likely to get a higher volume of results if you keep the location consistent throughout the posting. That means if you have a location within your title, it is the same location that is present within the body. It should also be the same location that is in the URL.

Save Keywords for the Actual Description

Do not feel compelled to squeeze in every keyword imaginable into the title. Save some of them for the actual body of the listing. If you want to optimize the job title, then just stick with the most important word or phrase you want to get across.

Have People Read Your Listing for You

Before posting a listing online for everyone to see, have some of your workers read it over first to give you notes. They may catch a typo in the title, or they may think that it is not descriptive enough.

Do Not Inflate the Importance of a Role

While it might be tempting to really make a job title stand out to attract a wider range of applicants, you do not want to be deceitful. This can hurt you in the long run if people think they cannot trust your business. If it is a lower-end, entry-level position, then just say so. There are plenty of people looking for that kind of work.
