A Social Security card is provided by the Social Security Administration and shows the holder’s full legal name and Social Security number. There are three different types of Social Security card: the first shows the holder’s name and Social Security number and allows him or her to work without legal restrictions; the second shows the same information and is provided to individuals who are temporary citizens of the United States; and the third shows the holder’s name and number, but is not valid for employment. Parents can apply for a Social Security number for their child when they apply for a birth certificate.
